A sample sailing vacation itinerary for New England: Cape Cod

No need to leave the country!  New England's sailing ground offers he comfort and convenience of being on home ground, yet historic sites, beautiful beaches and coastal towns make you feel like you've entered a new world.    This sailing area lends itself to a vacation longer than one week as there is so much to do and see.  But below is a 7 night sailing cruise itinerary.
Elizabeth Islands.  The island was named by the Wampanoagh Indians who were the first visitors there, and the name loosely means "lands end".  It's most famous for the fabulous fishing,  rustic charme and solitude.

Start your New England sailing vacation in Newport, Rhode Island, the most famous port in the area.

Day 1)
Once you are settled on your yacht, sail to Block Island , a still surprisingly quiet retreat off the coast of Newport towards Long Island Sound - idyllic, quiet, beautiful scenery and great bike-riding, exotic beaches & surfing.  Look out for whales when sailing around, and don't miss Narrangansett Bay with it's 13 lighthouses.   In the summer months,  the three rivers that converge in downtown Providence are set ablaza with 100 bonfires lighting up the water, as music plays throughout the downtown area. The result is an enchanting evening of art, music, and leisurely strolling

Day 2)
Next stop is Cuttyhunks, one of only two public islands that are part of the Elizabeth Islands.  The island got its name from the Wampanoagh Indians, who where the first visitors to land here.  The name loosely means "lands end".  Cuttyhunks is most famous for it's fabulous fishing, rustic charm and solitude.
Day 3)
The next day takes you to Edgartown, on Martha's Vineyard.    Rent a bike and explore the island's pristine beaches, clay cliffs, historical and cultural attractions.   Visit the Flying Horse Carousel which is not only the oldest working carousel in the US, but also a historic landmark.   From plentiful birdwatching, to antique shopping, there is something for everyone in the Vineyard.

Day 4)
Your next port of call is Nanturcket, which has many gorgeous beaches but watch out for the surf on the out of town beaches.   The Whaling Musuem is amazing and should be on your to do list.

Day 5)
Enjoy a lazy day in Nantucket, shopping, exploring or simply hanging out with a book on the beach!

Day 6)
Back to sailing.  Head to Menemsha Basin on Martha's Vineyard, and stroll around the picturesque fishing village.   This side of the Vineyard is a little more low key no no less beautiful.

Day 7)
Sail back to Newport, Rhode Island. Through the years Newport  has made a name for itself in a variety of manners, first as a colony founded on religious freedom, later as the summer playground for the American socialite families with names like Astor and Vanderbilt, as a key location for the United States Navy, and then as the yachting capital of the world.
Try take in a tour of the opulent mansion on the island, or explore the waterfront harbour which hosts many events throughout the year.   There are also excellent restaurants in Newport.

Day 8)
Unfortunately it is time to pack and go home.  You'll agree that 7 nights was too short to take in all the beauty of Cape Cod so start planning your next trip!  Or think of heading up a little further to Maine!
